Longxing Temple: Standing Buddha

CHINA, Shandong, Qingzhou; Northern Wei to Eastern Wei dynasty

This colorful Buddha stands on a pedestal. The robe overlaps in folds that are depicted in red and green paint. It is accentuated by low relief carvings around the hem where it flares out at the bottom. The nimbus behind the head, with its usnisa, has a lotus in the center carved in low relief with concentric circles radiating from it. There are still traces of gilding on the skin of the figure.
Buddha statues from the Longxing Temple site are usually depicted wearing heavy robes if they come from the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534) and lighter clothing if from the Eastern Wei dynasty (534–550). This example is believed to be from this transition period.
