Statuette of Tiger-Taming Arhat

CHINA

The Arhat has a high forehead, thick slanted eyebrows, deep-set eyes, a bulbous nose, long earlobes adorned with earrings, and a beard. His stout upper body is uncovered, revealing his belly, and his left hand holds up a wish-fulfilling jewel, while his right rests on his knee. The Arhat sits cross-legged on the rear of a powerful and muscular reclining tiger, which has been tamed by his kindness. The tiger also has an expressive face, which in some ways imitates that of the Arhat.
This work of art is in monochrome with a glistening finish. The strong curves of both the Arhat and the animal produce a dramatic effect.
