Dehua: Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Fujian, Quanzhou

Made in Dehua, this statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has a high headdress with a stole that flows down over the shoulders. The Bodhisattva has a slim build and wears a heavy necklace. The right hand holds a ruyi (wish-fulfilling talisman) while the left hand hangs down. A robe hangs down naturally with thick folds over the lower legs. The translucent porcelain effectively portrays the serenity, dignity, and compassion of Avalokitesvara.
