Fahua Pagoda: Reliquary Container (cover)

Fahua Pagoda: Reliquary Container

CHINA, Shanghai; Yuan dynasty

Discovered in 1996, the sides of this stone reliquary container have a border with a scroll leaf pattern. The lid has beveled edges and is also decorated with a scroll leaf pattern on the sides. The top of the lid is indented and has reliefs of two lions against a checkered background, and in the center, there is a knob decorated with geometrical patterns. The simplicity of the designs on the sides is in stark contrast with the complexity of the lid.
