Avalokitesvara is portrayed wearing a crown that is covered with a hood in this Japanese statuette. The Bodhisattva has crescent eyebrows and downcast eyes, and the thin lips are colored in vermilion. A robe with long sleeves covers both shoulders and stretches down to the bare feet. The robe has a low neck revealing a necklace. A Buddhist scroll is held in the right hand, which is supported by the left hand.
The statuette features a colorful robe outlined in gold luster, and has various decorations in luxurious gold with a rich mixture of dark blue, orange, ochre, and white. Such decorations include rosettes, scrolling vines, whorls, clouds, and diamond-shaped patterns.
