Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Porcelain

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

This porcelain statue was made in Dehua during the Ming dynasty. It is glazed in white and has crazing. Avalokitesvara is depicted with hair tied in a topknot and covered by a stole. The figure gazes downwards and the corners of the mouth are turned up slightly. A robe covers the shoulders and extends down to the feet in natural folds. The Bodhisattva wears a necklace. The hands are made of jade and held together, one on top of the other. Both hands were probably added at a later date. Avalokitesvara stands on a pedestal with cloud patterns.
