Embroidery of Heavenly King

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

This large embroidery was created during the Yuan dynasty. The Heavenly King stands against a reddish-brown background with cloud patterns. He has a square face, round eyes, and prominent cheeks. The crown has a flaming jewel near its center and hanging blue ribbons that flow in all directions. His sturdy figure is covered with elaborate armor. There is a dragon embroidered below his chest and heads of auspicious animals appear on his shoulder and knee pads. In his left hand is a bow, while the right hand holds an arrow. He wears a pair of boots decorated with cloud patterns. His overall appearance is formidable and imposing.
