Stoneware
This Tang dynasty vessel was produced in Changsha.
The vessel has a wide base from which the body curves gently up towards the sloping shoulders. The neck is short with straight sides, and there is a handle at the back and a short spout at the front. On each side, there is a loop through which a cord could be strung.
The body has a large image of a nine-story pagoda with a multi-layer base. Each story has a door in the center and a roof supported by bracket sets. The pagoda is surmounted by a spire with a canopy which has bells hanging from it. On each side of the pagoda, there is an incense holder with smoke rising up.
