Bowl with Thirty-Two Arhats

Porcelain

Bowl with Thirty-Two Arhats

CHINA; Ming dynasty

This bowl was created during the rule of Emperor Tianqi (reigned 1621–1627) of the Ming dynasty.
The blue and white porcelain bowl is 17.5 cm high, with a diameter at the foot of 18 cm and at the rim of 28.5 cm. The foot is rather high and is decorated with three blue lines. The bowl curves outward from the foot and then in toward the rim. It is decorated with 32 Arhats, in pairs or groups either sitting or standing, and performing different tasks. They are surrounded by a landscape of mountains, rocks, water, and trees.
The image composition on the bowl is rich and lively, and the characters and scenery produce a dynamic effect.
