Bowl with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

According to the inscription on the outside of the bowl, it was created in 1616 during the Ming dynasty.
This blue and white porcelain bowl is 7.6 cm high with a diameter at the rim of 16.5 cm. Starting from the foot, which is decorated with simple blue rings, there is a noticeable curvature followed by a gentle flaring at the rim.
Inside the bowl, there is a Chinese inscription reading, “Homage to Amitabha Buddha” at the bottom. Encircling the inscription is a ring of lotus flowers together with floral motifs. A similar pattern surrounds the rim.
On the outside of the bowl, there is a depiction of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva crossing the sea. Sudhana is shown facing the Bodhisattva across the sea with palms joined in reverence. Behind Avalokitesvara is Skanda, wearing a helmet, armor, and flowing robes.
