Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Dry lacquer

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This statue was produced using the hollow dry lacquer technique and gilding. Avalokitesvara wears a high topknot and the eyes are lowered in a serene expression. The figure stands barefoot on a lotus, the slender body decorated with ornaments and the robe fluttering gently in an imaginary breeze. It is known that the figure was made by Shen Shao’an from an inscription on the body.
