Linyi Twin Pagodas: Reliquary Casket

CHINA, Shanxi, Linyi; Northern Song dynasty

This reliquary casket consists of a base, body, and lid. It measures 24.7 cm long and is 16 cm wide, 22 cm high at the front while the back is 9.5 cm wide and 11 cm high. The stepped base is decorated with mountains in openwork. The body is enclosed by a balustrade. The front of the casket has a false door with three rows of nails and two handles. Along the side are engravings of the Ten Great Disciples in mourning kneeling on lotus pedestals. The curved lid is decorated with flower and grass patterns. The front has a tympanum with a dragon’s heads on either side. The top of the tympanum features a cloud, beads, flowers, and scroll leaf patterns.
