Xianyan Temple Huiguang Pagoda: Statuette of Deity

CHINA, Zhejiang, Rui’an; Northern Song dynasty

This statuette of a deity was recovered from the Huiguang Pagoda at Xianyan Temple in 1966. It was created using hammering and welding techniques. Apart from the halberd, the statuette is made of gilt silver, while the base is made of wood and covered with silver foil.
Leaning slightly to the left, the deity is depicted wearing a helmet and armor with round plates on the abdomen and chest. His head is held slightly downward, with a partial nimbus. His left hand is raised before his chest, while his right hand holds a halberd. An inscription on the base dates the statuette to 1037.
