Xianyan Temple Huiguang Pagoda: Reliquary Vessel

CHINA, Zhejiang, Rui’an; Northern Song dynasty

This glass reliquary vessel was recovered from the underground palace of Xianyan Temple’s Huiguang Pagoda in 1966. It has a slightly concave base, a spherical body, a neck which tapers slightly towards the narrow mouth, and wide rim. The vessel is 9 cm high with a diameter of 3.4 cm at its widest point, the body and neck of the vessel are decorated with curved designs. There is a large ring around the shoulder, and two rings around the neck. It contains a large number of relics.
The vessel is well-proportioned and displays the excellent craftsmanship of the Northern Song dynasty.
