Xiuning: Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Anhui, Xiuning; Yuan dynasty

This statuette was discovered in 1958 in Xiuning, a county near Jingdezhen. It features Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with a high topknot and a crown with ribbons that fall down to the shoulders. The Bodhisattva has a high forehead and a round face. Both shoulders are covered with a robe, leaving the chest bare and flowing down over the square throne, which stands on a Sumeru base. The hands perform the dhyana (meditation) mudra, and a mandorla in the shape of a plain lotus petal appears behind.
