Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Avalokitesvara’s hair is tied up in a topknot, together with a small tiara. The face is round with downcast eyes, a thin nose, and small mouth. On the chest, there is a beaded necklace with a lotus design. The Bodhisattva wears a cape over the shoulders and a loose-fitting and flowing robe with long sleeves. Seated on a cushion in royal ease posture, Avalokitesvara’s hands, which are damaged, rest upon one another on the right knee.
The vividly depicted folds of the robe and the cushion are reminiscent of the style popular towards the end of the Ming dynasty.
