Jade, gilt silver, and gemstone
This gilt silver and jade hairpin was recovered from the tomb of Emperor Wanli (reigned 1572–1620) of the Ming dynasty in 1958. It is 15 cm long and 5.7 cm at its widest part. The Buddha is made of jade and stands on a lotus pedestal. Above the Buddha is a miniature Buddha figure sitting in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The jade Buddha is flanked by Sanskrit seed syllables, one of which is missing. Five large red and blue gems figure prominently to the sides and below the lotus pedestal.
The jade Buddha has curled hair and a delicate, round face, wearing a robe that covers both shoulders with multiple folds. The left hand is placed in front of the abdomen, while the right hand is naturally placed at the side as if performing the varada (wish-granting) mudra.
