Cornelian and gold
This reliquary was recovered from the heavenly palace of Chaoyang North Pagoda in 1988. The container is made of cornelian and the cover is made of gold. It has a diameter of 4.2 cm at its widest point and measures 4.5 cm high. The cover has a small ring in the center to which a set of chains are connected in order to seal the container.
With a flat base, curved body, and prominent rim, this fine example of a cornelian reliquary is reddish brown with a swirling cloud-like pattern. Previously used to store milky-white relics, which were the size of a grain of rice, it was restored in 1992.
