Dehua: Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Fujian, Quanzhou; Ming dynasty

The Bodhisattva sits in full lotus position on a three-layer lotus throne. The head is adorned with an image of Amitabha Buddha in the center and a floral crown below, from which ribbons hang down and fall over the shoulders. The Bodhisattva wears a long beaded necklace, armlets, and bracelets. The upper body is covered in a short-sleeved robe, while the lower body is clothed in a long dress with a knotted rope belt that hangs down on to the throne.
The statuette is portrayed with delicately flowing lines, emphasizing the gentle nature of Avalokitesvara. It displays the fine craftsmanship of Dehua porcelain.
