Lingshi Temple Pagoda: Incense Burner

CHINA, Zhejiang, Taizhou; Northern Song dynasty

This fine example from the Yue kilns was recovered in 1987. The celadon incense burner is 19.5 cm high, with a diameter of 12.6 cm at the base and 17.5 cm at its widest point. The spherical burner is in two parts. The lower part is supported by double lotus petals and the upper consists of circular vine and leaf patterns in openwork, which allows the smoke to disperse. The inscriptions in black ink inside the burner state the date it was made and the names of donors.
