Jingzhi Temple Pagoda: Conch

CHINA, Hebei, Baoding; Northern Song dynasty

The conch shell is a ritual instrument used to announce Dharma services. This porcelain shell was recovered from the underground palace of Jingzhi Temple Pagoda in 1969. The shell measures 19.3 cm long, 19.8 cm high, with an 8.4 cm wide opening. Except for the unglazed top section, the conch is glazed in white and decorated with wave patterns. The mouthpiece is conical and has three raised lines, and the opening has an irregular shape.
