Silver and ivory

Prayer Wheel

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This Tibetan prayer wheel consists of an ivory handle and a silver revolving drum, which is divided into two sections by three gold bands. The Sanskrit Six-Syllable Mantra “om mani padme hum” is engraved in gold on the exterior. Between each syllable, there is an auspicious object such as a parasol, a Dharma wheel, cinnabar, and mustard plant. On top of the drum is a flattened sphere, an inverted lotus, and a lotus bud. The counterweight hangs on the end of a chain attached to the side of the drum. Inside, there are Tibetan Buddhist texts. This prayer wheel is regarded as one of the finest; it is made of high quality materials and displays exceptional craftsmanship.
