Manuscript Covers

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Measuring 65 cm long and 11.5 cm wide, these manuscript covers consist of small carved ivory panels within a wooden framework. The ivory patterns have been created using a piercing technique. Along the top of each cover, there are cloud patterns enclosing images of a dragon, elephant, and lion. Along the beveled edges there are cloud patterns bordering the eight auspicious symbols. In between the cloud patterns are scrolling leaves, vine patterns, and various symbols. The wooden frame is also inlaid with small ivory designs.
