Qing Imperial Palace: Alms Bowl

CHINA, Beijing; Qing dynasty

This highly decorative alms bowl was once in the collection of the Qing Imperial Palace. In the shape of an oblate spheroid with a narrow flat base, the bowl has a rim that is ringed by floral and dragon patterns. The main section of the bowl is decorated with eight dragons alternating with the eight auspicious symbols, and interlaced with a scroll leaf pattern. On the bottom, there is an inscription stating that it was cast during the rule of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736–1795). The interior is lined with red cloth with patterns in gold.
