Mogao Cave 17: Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This piece of a banner dates from the 9th century. Manjusri Bodhisattva sits in relaxed posture on a lotus throne that rests on the back of a lion. The right hand forms the varada (wish-granting) mudra, and the left hand holds a lotus stem. Manjusri has a brightly colored nimbus and aureole, and wears ornate jewelry and elegant transparent leggings. The lion has a wide open mouth and a colorful mane. A lion keeper with a Central Asian appearance stands at the bottom of the picture holding a red leash attached to the beast’s neck.
