Mogao Cave 17: Seven Treasures of the Cakravartin

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This 9th century banner was found in Mogao Cave 17. The seven treasures of the cakravartin are arranged within a landscape and painted beside blank cartouches. The treasures, from top to bottom, are a Dharma wheel, a jewel, a minister, a general, a queen, an elephant, and a horse. The seven treasures are a common theme in Buddhist paintings, although the arrangement here is unique. In other similar works, the coffer is sometimes replaced by an image of a minister.
