CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This 10th century banner depicts the fierce-looking Virupaksa, Heavenly King of the West. He is dressed in an ornate suit of armor, holds a sword with both hands, and stands upon a demon. A purple cloud rises above the nimbus. The banner includes a headpiece and two side streamers decorated with flower and animal patterns. The body of the banner is framed by a red border.
