Amitabha Buddha

Ink and color on silk

Amitabha Buddha

CHINA; Southern Song dynasty

In this painting, Amitabha Buddha stands on lotus pedestals looking down to one side. The left hand is raised with the thumb and middle finger touching, while the right hand is held out in a mudra. The Buddha has a round nimbus and a usnisa. Both the red monastic robe and dark inner robe are covered with rippling folds.
An inscription discovered in the lower-left corner using infrared suggests the painting was made in Ningbo, where much of the Buddhist art of the Southern Song dynasty was created.
