Amitabha Buddha Triad

Ink and color on silk

Amitabha Buddha Triad

CHINA; Southern Song dynasty

This 12th century painting illustrates the Amitabha Buddha Triad descending on clouds to welcome a being to the Pure Land. Amitabha Buddha, the central figure, has a round nimbus and a unique mandorla depicted with numerous curved fine lines. The Buddha has a low, flat usnisa, and wears a green inner robe under a red monastic robe. The hands form the highest grade of lowest class mudra, and the feet rest on two different-colored lotus pedestals. The canopy above the Buddha is decorated with beads and appears to flutter in the wind. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, standing on the right beside Amitabha, wears a headdress with a Buddha image and holds a lotus throne. Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, standing on the left, joins palms.
