Cisheng Temple: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Cisheng Temple: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Henan, Jiaozuo; Tang dynasty

This mural was removed from the wall of Cisheng Temple in 952 during the Five Dynasties (907–960). It is thought to have been painted during the Late Tang period (846–907). Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva wears a headdress, stoles, and a dhoti. The body is adorned with a necklace, earrings, armlets, and beaded ornaments. Standing in tribhanga posture, the Bodhisattva looks focused and peaceful. A long-stemmed lotus is held in the left hand. The figure is outlined with black ink lines. Color is applied to the clothing and jewelry.
