Todaiji Temple Golden Hall: Alms Bowl

JAPAN, Nara; Nara period

Created during the 8th century, this alms bowl was located in the Golden Hall of Todaiji Temple, where it would have been filled with offerings for the Buddha. It was listed as a National Treasure in 1944.
Made of gilt bronze, the bowl is 28.5 cm in diameter and 19.5 cm in height. The Sumeru-shaped base is 5.5 cm high with a diameter of 19.8 cm. The bowl curves gracefully from the wide mouth to the narrower base, and the rim has an inscription stating the weight to be the equivalent of 2.8 kg.
