Avalokitesvara in a White Robe

CHINA; Ming dynasty

This picture was painted by Qiu Zhu, the daughter of the Ming dynasty painter Qiu Ying. Qiu Zhu was known for her paintings of landscapes and figures. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has delicate facial features and wears a white robe. Next to the Bodhisattva, who is seated on a lotus, there is a willow branch in a blue vase. Three large, faintly outlined lotus flowers surround Avalokitesvara. The white robe and skin of the Bodhisattva, along with the blue vase and lotus petals, stand out against the plain background. There is an inscription and two seal imprints in the lower right corner, and several imprints of collectors’ seals in the upper register.
