Arhat

Ink and color on paper

Arhat

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This painting depicts an Arhat and a youth beneath a tree. The broad-shouldered Arhat has a square face and a mustache. He wears a monastic robe and rests his head on his arms, holding a whisk in his right hand. Seated on a bed of leaves atop a rock, the Arhat gazes down at a youth grinding medicine on the ground.
The Arhat’s clothing is painted with smooth, rounded lines, while youth’s clothing appears coarse and pliable. The rock that Arhat sits on is painted with dense strokes, while the rocks in the background are much lighter. This painting features fairly simple yet precise brushstrokes and refined, elegant colors, creating a unique, antiquated ambiance. The signature and seal prints of the artist Luo Pin are in the lower right corner.
