Cudapanthaka

Ink and color on silk

Cudapanthaka

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

This painting depicts Cudapanthaka, the 16th Arhat described in the Records of Nandimitra’s Discourse on Abiding Dharma. It is part of a set of three portraits of Arhats, along with an image of Nandimitra kept in the Shanghai Museum and a picture of Vajraputra kept in Nanjing University.
Cudapanthaka has a large, round head, large ears pierced with earrings, a beard, and a partially bared chest. He wears a blue monastic robe over a red inner robe. His left hand holds a clear crystal vase while his right palm is covered with a piece of white cloth. He sits on a rock with his right foot crossed over his left knee and gazes off into the distance.
