Sakyamuni Buddha (detail)

Sakyamuni Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Sakyamuni Buddha sits in full lotus position on an elevated lotus throne. The Buddha wears a red monastic robe that covers both shoulders. He holds one palm above the other, signifying the reception of alms. A colorful aureole surrounds the body. The canopy above the nimbus is decorated with flaming jewels. The lines of Tibetan text written beside the Buddha include a mantra and the phrases “Prostration to the World Honored One” and “World Honored One, please protect me, please protect me.”
