Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (detail)

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva sits in relaxed posture on a six-tusked white elephant. The Bodhisattva has unusually long hair that flows down to the waist in fine stands. Wearing a headdress topped with a flaming jewel, Samantabhadra gazes down at a palm leaf manuscript held in the right hand. The large nimbus encircling the upper body resembles a bright moon. The simple ink-washed background leaves the viewer unable to tell whether the Bodhisattva is in the air or on the ground, giving the picture a mysterious, dreamlike quality. In the lower left corner, there is an inscription by the artist, Li Lin, along with two seal imprints.
