Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Ink and color on paper

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

An inscription in the lower right corner dated 1582 attributes this painting to Ding Yunpeng. The central figure, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, sits upon a rock that appears to be surrounded by water. The upper and lower registers are left empty to symbolize the unity of water and sky. Avalokitesvara wears a simple white robe. The Bodhisattva has a gentle facial expression with downcast eyes, as if in contemplation. On the left, there is a vase containing a willow branch. The vast, empty space surrounding the central figure gives this work an aura of serenity.
