Sakyamuni Buddha

CHINA; Southern Song dynasty

Sakyamuni Buddha sits on a lotus throne atop a tall hexagonal pedestal. The Buddha has a rounded face, half-closed eyes, and a peaceful expression. A golden nimbus surrounds the head. The right hand is raised, forming the lotus mudra. A black inner robe edged in white is covered by a red monastic robe adorned with gold rosettes. The ends of the robes hang loosely over the edges of the lotus throne. A canopy hangs in the center of the upper register. Layers of flowing clouds are painted below the throne.
