Assembly of Three Buddhas

Ink and color on silk

Assembly of Three Buddhas

CHINA; Southern Song dynasty

The signature “Zhao of Siming” on this painting suggests that it could have been painted by Zhao Jue of Zhejiang, Ningbo during the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). It was later brought to Japan, where it was listed as an Important Cultural Property in 1988. In the upper register, three seated Buddhas are arranged in a triangular formation below a layer of clouds. The Ten Great Disciples stand behind the Buddhas. Two Bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings, and a multitude of heavenly beings fill the bottom half of the painting, where a pillar topped with a flaming jewel stands in the center.
