Sixteen Arhats

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

These paintings of the Sixteen Arhats are listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Each Arhat is depicted standing, differing from most other paintings of the Arhats, which show them in a seated position. They have bright eyes and wear monastic robes draped over brown inner robes. Plain nimbuses surround their heads. Two of the Arhats face directly towards the viewer, while the others are turned to one side, gazing off into the distance. The Arhats hold various objects including a sutra, an incense burner, a ruyi (wish-fulfilling talisman), a whisk, a round fan, and a staff. Ten of the Arhats are accompanied by attendants. The faces and hands of the figures are delicately drawn and carefully shaded, while the robes are outlined with more defined strokes. The elegant, understated coloring is characteristic of Yuan dynasty art.
