Qingliang Temple: Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi’an; Sui dynasty

The Bodhisattva is seated on a throne with legs overhanging the edges and crossed at the ankles in a way that both raised soles point to the sides. The figure’s head is tilted slightly to the right. An ornate crown is worn on the head, framing a rounded face. The empty joint at the crown’s center may have once held a gemstone or some identifying attribute. The Bodhisattva also wears a long beaded necklace that falls across the lap in addition to the solid collar necklace. A stole hangs over the left shoulder and loops over both arms. The folds of the skirt over the throne and about the feet are skillfully executed, while those hanging over the legs are created in such a way as to suggest the shape of the legs beneath.
