Shalu Monastery Central Hall: Vajrapani Bodhisattva

CHINA, Tibet, Shigatse

Vajrapani is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas and is often seen with Avalokitesvara and Manjusri as the Three Protectors in Vajrayana Buddhism. The Tang version of the Amoghapasa Dharani Sutra describes Vajrapani with blue skin holding a white whisk and a vajra.
The figure stands in the tribhanga posture. The hair is built into an intricate topknot and encircled by a crown with sidepieces. The right hand holds an upended vajra, which is the figure’s defining attribute. The woven garments are a later addition. The original statue was bare-chested, and the transparent skirt is more suggested than apparent.
