Seated Buddha

Gilt bronze

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The Buddha is seated on a Sumeru throne with a reversed lotus base. The stepped octagonal supports are mounted on a four-legged stand with a serrated upper edge. The figure’s left hand is raised in a mudra, and the right hand is probably in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The Buddha’s monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and shows the inner robe secured at the waist. The excess material is draped over the throne in cascading folds. The petal-shaped mandorla behind the figure encloses a radiating lotus nimbus within its flame-filled surface.
