Sakyamuni Buddha Triad

Yellow limestone

Sakyamuni Buddha Triad

CHINA; Northern Wei dynasty

The Buddha is seated in half lotus position with hands probably in the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. His monastic robe cascades in an ornate fashion over the front of the throne. Slender Bodhisattvas stand to either side of the central figure with palms joined in reverence. Two winged lions crouch beneath them. The ornate mandorla that unites the group is flame-shaped and surrounds an inner petal-shaped aureole with flames. Within the aureole is a lotus nimbus encircled with tendrils. An inscription along the stand dates the sculpture to 526 and states that it was dedicated by the monk Tanxing.
