Buddha Triad

Yellow limestone

Buddha Triad

CHINA; Western Wei dynasty

The Buddha sits in full lotus position on a throne wearing a robe that covers both shoulders and is opened at the front. The robe drapes over the throne in elaborate folds. Attendant Bodhisattvas with broad smiles are on either side. The Buddha has a lotus nimbus surrounded by three concentric circles. The lower part of the mandorla is plain while the upper part has a flame design. The front of the base has a mountain censer that is flanked by two Dharma protecting lions. An inscription on the sculpture dates it to 542, and names Yang Zishou as the donor.
