Gongxian Caves: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Henan, Zhengzhou; Northern Wei dynasty
This sculpture was originally located in the Gongxian Caves, and is similar in style to sculptures found in the nearby Longmen Grottoes.
The Bodhisattva has a gentle expression and wears a tall lotus crown. There are remains of a mandorla behind the head. The head is slightly inclined on the long neck, giving place to small, sloping shoulders. One arm is raised while the other is lowered, but both hands are damaged. The lower body of the figure is missing.
