Mogao Cave 17: Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This fragment is thought to have been part of a painting of the Pure Land from the late 8th century. The central figure in the fragment, a Bodhisattva sitting on a lotus throne, appears to be an attendant of a larger Buddha figure. The Bodhisattva joins the palms in reverence, and is surrounded by a nimbus and an aureole. Bracelets, a stole, and a dhoti cover the body. There are three Bodhisattvas with red nimbuses on the right beside the central figure. In the lower register, three white Bodhisattvas sit behind a balustrade. Each figure wears a crown, and they all form different mudras.
