Mogao Cave 17: Medicine Buddha Traveling

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

The Medicine Buddha stands on two lotuses in the center of the picture. The Buddha holds up a blue medicine bowl in the left hand. The monk’s staff held in the right hand leans against the shoulder. An elderly monk with joined palms and a younger monk holding a sutra scroll stand beside the Buddha. A canopy hangs at the top of the picture. An inscription within a cartouche in the upper right corner dedicates the painting to the deceased daughter of the sponsor.
