Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

Discovered in Mogao Cave 17, this 9th century banner depicts a Bodhisattva standing in tribhanga posture upon a lotus pedestal. The Bodhisattva is adorned with a crown, a necklace, and bracelets. A sash is draped over the left shoulder, and floating stoles hang over the arms. The orange and green dhoti has intricate folds and is secured by a white sash. The top of the headpiece is painted with flowers, and the bottom edge is decorated with floriated diagonal patterns.
Although the footer is lost and most of the colors have faded, the banner and the triangular headpiece remain well-preserved.
