First Panchen Lama Khedrup Gelek Pelzang

Born in Ngamring county of Shitgase, Khedrup Gelek Pelzang received his name after he became a novice monk at the age of seven. He was educated in Sakya Monastery, and later became renowned for his excellent skills in debate. He traveled to Lhasa to receive Dharma teachings from Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. When he turned 21, he studied under Rendawa Zhonnu Lodro, from whom he took full ordination as a monastic. A year later, he officially became a disciple of Tsongkhapa and converted to the Gelug school.
The artistic achievements of Gelek Pelzang were exceptional. He was responsible for the construction of Riwo Dangchen Monastery, and in 1418, at the invitation of the Gyantse king, he assisted in the restoration of Palcho Monastery. He became the abbot of Ganden Monastery in 1431, and it was during this time that he built a golden Chinese-style roof over the top of the stupa which held the body of Tsongkhapa.
It is purported that the thangka of Tsongkhapa in the central hall of Ganden Monastery, and the image of Maitreya Buddha and various murals in Sera Monastery were painted by Gelek Pelzang. The painting of Teaching the Dharma in Ganden Monastery is also known to be his work.
